PHD Degree in Biology, American Woman, NYC

My ultimate job would be to work for the Center for Disease Control. I have had this vision of my future for many years, the desire to devote my professional life to doing biomedical research and fighting disease. I am especially passionate about virology and viral gene therapy. The program of my dreams is XXU’s XXXX Institute. I want a PhD in microbiology, especially virology, so that I can become a state-of-the-art biomedical researcher. What intrigues me most about the program at Sackler are the faculty and their wide variety of research interests, especially virus-host cell and HIV T-cell interactions. I see Drs. XXXX, XXXX, and XXXX, in particular, as heroes for their cutting-edge studies on the immunodeficiency virus and viral envelope proteins.  Reading about new biomedical discoveries is my favorite pass time and I yearn to immerse myself full time in the struggle against HIV and cancer and the study of viral gene therapy. Furthermore, by studying in NYC, I will have access to world-class seminars, annual committee meetings, state of the art laboratories, computer facilities, libraries, and e-journal buildings. While I am asking first for direct admission to your PHD Program, I would also be honored to be accepted to your Master’s Program, in the hope of having the opportunity to prove myself as worthy of further study.

An only child from Texas, I have always had an adventurous spirit, an ocean-sized tank of curiosity, and a confidence level that has taken me around the world on a “self- discovery” mission since graduating from college. Especially salient among my many adventures, was volunteering at an orphanage just a mile’s hike from Dracula’s castle in Romania. I have studied Macrobiotics and Japanese alternative medicine intensively, most recently at a centuries old monastery in the Berkshires. I also completed a 12 week professional position recruiting international volunteers, living in a different city each week, working 13 hour days. I have stepped so far out of my comfort zone that I no longer have one. I live to explore different cultures and share in the healing of our species and our planetary home.

My greatest singly moment of clarity was a couple of years ago, shortly after my best friend since the third grade, XXXX, was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 23. She was prescribed Gleevac everyday for the rest of her life. There I was, studying biochemistry, and I understood her cell’s machinery, how this drug was saving her life! I was in awe. And the Delta 32 mutation lecture sounded like something out of a Sci-fi flick. My eyes were glued to Dr. XXXX, an Irish professor, as he pieced together the possible links between the Delta 32 mutation, the bubonic plague survivors of Eyam, England, and the HIV immunity. A biology lesson took on the character of a time machine with Sherlock Holmes at the wheel. I was hooked!  It was now obvious, microbiology, especially virology, was my destiny.

Some applicants have higher grades, but I graduated debt-free because I worked long hours as a massage therapist. Now I crave nothing but long hours in the lab, burning the midnight oil reading thousands of pages; social life has become my lowest priority. I want to attend hundreds of lectures. I could not be more serious at 25 years old. My heart, mind, body, and soul, have been sold into slavery to the advancement of science. I thank you for considering my application to the finest program in the world.
