DPM, Doctor of Podiatriy, Indian, Single Mom

January 9, 2013

For over a decade, I have immersed myself in biology and the medical industry.  As a microbiologist, and later working for two medical practices, increasing my understanding of medical ethics, I have maintained a conceptual continuity in my career, and yet have been left wanting to do that much more.  Indeed, working for a private medical practice has convinced me that I am exactly where I need to be, contributing to the amelioration of lives through becoming a quality physician, and serving the community as a trusted medical professional and role model.  Turning to XXXX University is more than a logical choice, it is a natural choice, born of my sympathy for the patients I have been fortunate to work with, and the passion for helping others gain greater health, mobility and enjoyment of life.

In terms of my research interests, I am particularly interested in investigating the treatment of foot and ankle disorders, diseases and injuries and am eager to work with all ages, from children to the elderly.  Earning a DPM will allow me to bring a number of my plans, goals – my dreams – to fruition.

In reality, after I graduated from college in 1998, I shortly thereafter got married, supporting my husband in his pursuit of a Ph.D. and setting up his practice, planning that I would then begin my own Ph.D. studies.  While our marriage has since ended, I am much stronger for my experiences, raising my children as a single mom.  Helping my ex-husband set up his practice gave me an excellent foundation from which to help others do the same.  Whether we find it palatable or not, a medical practice is still a business, and I have been involved in marketing the business, payroll issues, scheduling, budgeting, skills that will be invaluable in setting up my own practice.  More importantly, the love and encouragement my children give me is combined with my desire to make their world, that much better through my efforts.

I bring with me to XXXX, not only an academic foundation in the sciences, and medical experiences but coming from India, I have a worldview that is quite different from my academic peers.  Completing my education in America, as well as living and working here, I developed an ability to interact effectively with not only my fellow colleagues, but since having experienced life as, basically, an immigrant, I feel particularly sensitive to the needs of minorities; combined with this is my ability to speak two languages fluently.  There is a need to reach out to our diverse patients, to understand and appreciate our differences, whether cultural or socioeconomic.  This is critically important given the vast influx of persons with varied backgrounds into America’s healthcare system.

Midwestern is my sole choice for scholastic development.  In the most practical terms, the school is highly accessible, as I live close by.  Even more importantly, though, I have been impressed by the relevance of the curriculum, one that I anticipate the ideal level of exposure to relevant issues combined with excellent facilities.

I look forward to my time with XXXX and thank you for your consideration.
