DNP, Doctorate Degree, Nurse Practitioner

January 3, 2013

I have reached a point in my academic, professional, and volunteer career where I am intent upon entering into the Doctoral Nursing program with UXXXX’s College of Nursing.  Throughout my two decades in the field of Nursing, I have seen an increasing need for research into and implementation of policies that would positively affect, in a sustainable fashion, the decision-making process for men diagnosed with prostate cancer.  Moreover, my objective is to conduct research that investigates disparities I have seen in practice in the treatment of prostate cancer, and how age, race and culture affect the decision-making process.

Equipped with a DNP and having a firm foundation in research, I will be able to bring my career plans to fruition, namely to lead a research team at the VA Medical Center in XXXX, independent research in my practice, and to be a professor and mentor to other nurses, particularly minority nurses who are considering furthering themselves through higher education.  Indeed, for years I have been helping to bridge the minority gap in the American healthcare system.  Through the DNP program, I will bring maturation to my career, offering the benefit of my years of practical experience in the consultation of other healthcare providers, and in the classroom.  Upon graduating, I will be working on a par with other healthcare professionals, most of whom have a doctorate as a matter of course for their practice.  This will bring with it an enhanced attitude towards, and greater respect for the nursing profession, ensuring healthy relationships within multidisciplinary medical staff.

When I began working as a novice nurse, I was amazed with the diversity of people that I served particularly vulnerable populations in inner city hospitals such as intravenous drugs users, the homeless and patients whose conditions were exacerbated by an array of social issues.  Later, as a nurse practitioner, I went on to serve women with little or no health insurance, and increased my understanding of the realities of existing social services that lacked the ability to cover their unique needs.  Many people forget or never consider that nurses serve the incarcerated, and how our country tends to those that have served in wars, our veterans, many of whom are elderly and face multiple medical problems.  Throughout these numerous and varied experiences, aside from my ability to work in various set-ups, those that are well-equipped versus those that are lacking – to think on my feet - I have reached out to all my patients with the same aim: to provide compassionate care for all, the poor, the sick and the needy, at all costs.

In my capacity as a urology nurse practitioner these past four years for the VA Medical Center in XXXX, I have laid the groundwork for the focus of my research and feel that my performance, initiative and dedication to my patients are solid evidence of my ability to perform maturely, enthusiastically and competently in an academic research setting.  These past four years, I have further refined my critical thinking skills when approaching the urology consult process and addressing its most critical issues, and increasing the number of patients served by the department.  To bring this about, I had to prove myself, not only in my clinical acumen, but also in my verbal and written skills, team building ability and willingness to be an advocate for all patients, prospective and current, as well as identifying and recruiting patients for urology studies.  What is more, these studies have increased my quantitative and statistical ability, skills that will prove invaluable in my doctoral research, not to mention my being responsible for our department obtaining a neuromodulation device.  This device has also increased our department’s ability to collect data relating to a number of patient conditions.  As my references attest, I have been instrumental in increasing the number of patients that can now be seen by our department, in addition to adding optional non-invasive treatments to our list of services for refractory lower urinary tract symptoms.

UXXXX is my sole choice for scholastic development.  My research into the College of Nursing’s DNP program has revealed a curriculum with excellent breath and unsurpassed autonomy.  More importantly, and aside from being one of the leading Nursing Colleges in America, I am excited about the prospect of working with Professors XXXX and XXXX as I find them to be an excellent match for my research interests into health-related problems of vulnerable populations and multicultural and elderly populations, respectively.

Twenty years of practical experiences, clinical acumen combined with case study development and analysis have prepared me for the opportunity and challenge of UXXXX’s DNP program.  My dedication to the patients of the VA Medical Center in XXXX, a willingness to go beyond my job’s requirements, volunteering my time to reduce waiting lists and expand services clearly shows my capability, motivation, and compassion for my present and future patients.  No other field ever has nor ever could bring me the same level of personal or professional satisfaction and I look forward with great eagerness to contributing that much more.  Thank you for your time and consideration.
