MPH Epidemiology, Saudi Cardiologist

My central professional dream in life is to become the finest and most distinguished interventional cardiologist—and a tireless advocate for public health advancement--in my city, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. I want to become recognized as a mover and shaker in medicine who helps to implement changes in our health care service delivery system that serve to reduce the ravages of heart disease in sustainable ways, primarily through public health education. Your especially distinguished MPH Program at XXXX University will serve me well as a springboard for a lifetime of achievements safeguarding and prolonging the lives of the inhabitants of my city; and not just Saudi citizens, but our international resident population and guest workers as well.  I am pleased to report that I am fully sponsored by the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission.

Since April of 2014, I have been serving as an Associate Consultant in the Department of Internal Medicine at the XXXX Medical Complex in Jeddah. I was recently appointed to a supervisory position with respect to our clinics for government employees; this has entailed a thoroughgoing review and overhaul of our policy guidelines. I am also serving as Chairman of our XXXXCommittee resulting in additional administrative responsibility for which I am thankful as it provides me with extra experience in dealing with employees and patients, helping to make our work go smoothly in an environment that is as friendly as it is professional. The highlights of my career so far have included participation in our Rheumatology International Day in 2010 to educate people about Rheumatology disease and providing free screenings and consultations. I also participated in our Nephrology International Day in 2011.

Jeddah is the KSA’s most international city, and home to large populations of foreigners from all over the world. I especially look forward to being trained at XXXX University because of your diverse student population from all over the world, learning from my peers as well as your distinguished faculty, from their examples and testimonies about the public health struggles that they face as well in their home countries. I look forward to exchanging ideas about our public health challenges on a global level, so that we can learn together; networking and collaborating, building ties that will last for a lifetime, sharing creative ideas for progressive evolution in the health care sectors in which we work.

I have decided to give my life to public health in the area of cardiology and interventional cardiology because I crave the challenge entailed in the struggle to drastically reduce the extremely high rates of heart disease and death suffered by Saudi Arabians. On one of the most memorable days of my life so far, I witnessed a patient who had an unsuccessful thrombolysis and was in severe pain and his life in great danger--just before the interventionist opened his blocked vessel. This is the kind of life-saving engagement that I crave and hope to someday make available to all patients in Saudi Arabia who need this treatment, irrespective of their migratory or economic status; in addition to keeping as many of our residents as I can from ending up in this position to begin with.

I have cultivated an advanced understanding of biostatistics that enables me to evaluate the strength of the studies and to critique them creatively, especially with respect to epidemiology and its relationship to other risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Completing your program will help me to build tremendously on what I have learned so far, preparing me to make important contributions down the road to the practice of cardiology in the KSA in a way that enhances the efficacy of our public health structures.

After earning my MPH Degree, I intend to apply for a residency program in Internal Medicine and then to also complete a fellowship in cardiology and interventional cardiology in the USA. Earning the MPH at XXXX University will guide me always in my approach and devotion to cardiology insofar as I learn to think as a scientist and policy designer about medical issues, as well as a cardiologist.

I have a strict commitment and dedication to my work and a great respect for my colleagues irrespective of their nationality, race, gender or religious beliefs and I want to personally build bridges between my country and the rest of the world as members of the global medical community. Jeddah city which is a portal city which receives people from all over the world, many of them heading for pilgrimage, and this has made me able to understand and deal with a huge variety of people with all different types of cultural customs, practices, and mentalities.

After finishing medical school (2007), I spent 18 months in cardiology as a service resident at a large, state-of-the-art cardiology center with over 1500 Cath and 3000 Echo studies a year in addition to the electrophysiology lab. I had the privilege of working in the CCU for over 6 months where I was exposed to countless cardiac emergencies and learned how to manage the critically ill in a highly effective manner.

Next, I was accepted to a residency program at the KFSH & RC, the ultimate state of the art tertiary care hospital in the Kingdom, where I have been treating a broad variety of diseases and a great diversity of patients. I was elected as Chief Resident for the final year of this residency providing me with the additional privilege of enhancing my teaching and leadership skills. I passed my final internal medicine board exam with honors, in 3rd place nationwide (one of only 10 honorary degree holders in the kingdom in 2013).

I thank you for considering my application to your distinguished program.
