MA-HRM, Human Resource Management, Africa

The most formative privilege that I have had in life has been working as a volunteer with the American Red Cross as a member of a Disaster Action Team. This has helped me to gain a much better understanding of how organizations work, especially under pressure, and this experience has inspired me to become a Human Resources professional with the training that I hope to receive in your program.

My involvement with Human Resources began prior to my immigration to America from Abidjan in my native Ivory Coast. I was employed by XXXX, a water distribution company from 11/03 through 02/04. I learned a great deal through my role as designer and creator of a database system to track 1537 employees. With this database, we were able to monitor each employee’s performance and progress as well as transfers within the company. I also managed employee’s time and attendance records to ensure that vacation time and promotions were accurately recorded.

Along with my professional experience in the Ivory Coast, I also completed a Master’s Degree in in Criminology along with a Graduate Diploma in Human Resource Management from the University of Abidjan. Since immigrating to the US, I have continued to prepare myself for entry into a Master’s Program here. Thus, I have taken graduate-level Business Management classes at the University of XXXX. And I have selected classes that focus on issues and practices in Human Resource Management as well as information research skills. Also studying at XXXX University in Washington DC, I have taken classes in Managerial Information Systems, Quantitative factors in Management, and Organizational theory in Human Resource Management.

For the past four years, I have been employed with the XXXX Institute of Health, in Bethesda, MD, working as an Assistant Animal Laboratory Technician. I am pleased to have fulfilling work but I now seek greater professional challenges. The Metropolitan School of Professional Studies at the CUA is my first choice for graduate study because of its location, flexibility and “applications” orientation culminating in the Master’s Capstone course with the privilege of completing an applied project.

I have struggled throughout my life to cultivate a multi-cultural and multi-lingual identity, achieving, for example, an intermediate level in Spanish—reading, writing and speaking. A team player and a quick, life-long learner, I hope to some day be able to make a contribution to developing countries in the area of human resource organization. I have done extensive public relations work and I am a highly self-motivated problem solver. Having long cultivated a special talent for enhancing organizational efficiency and meeting operational deadlines, I am well-read in my field and my appreciation for diversity has been bolstered by my travels, spending months in different African countries—both English and French speaking—enhancing my ability to adapt to different business environments, learning to respect different belief structures and cultural values.
